How long does it take to get in shape?

I’ve been asking myself how long does it take to get in shape for years. What I didn’t learn until quite recently, however, is that before one can determine how long it takes to get in shape, one has determine a personal threshold for proper diet and exercise.

Personal Diet Threshold

In case you weren’t already aware, getting in shape does require good eating habits. It’s not to say you can’t have the occassional sweet, but a majority of the things that make it into your body should serve a greater purpose: fueling your body. Yes, food can be a pleasure, but on a biological level, it’s just fuel to keep our bodies going. Just like a fine automobile, it needs the proper fuel to run smoothly and for a long time.

Personal Exercise Threshold

If you’re anything like me, you don’t want to hear (much less entertain the thought) about exercise, but it’s also necessary. Now, exercise doesn’t need to be rigorous to be effective. In fact, exercise can be downright fun if you do something you enjoy — of the top of my head, I love to dance and I love the Gilad programs on FitTV. The key is just to get up and get active. Start small in the beginning (try walking around the block) and as your body acclimates to the work out, start bumping it up. The more rigorous the sustained activity, the more results you’re likely to see — just make sure you don’t overexert yourself.

So, when you’re asking yourself the question “how long does it take to get in shape”, remember that you’re a unique individual. As long as you eat properly, maintain a good exercise regime, you’ll be in shape before you know it. And if you like, you’re welcome to follow along with my own personal fitness journey right here.
